  Mary Monica Mahoney, 79, a resident of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away at home on October 17, 2018. She was born in the Square Ballyragget, County Kilkenny, Ireland on January 23, 1939 to the late Thomas and Annie Hyland.

  Mary came to Poughkeepsie on January 5, 1954 and was sponsored by and resided with her aunt and uncle, Kathleen and John McNiff. She was educated at St. Mary’s School. Mary went to study at Mount St. Mary’s and joined the Dominican Order as a postulate. Mary was naturalized as a citizen on July 10, 1959 as Mary Monica Hyland, Sister M. Thomas Anne, O.P. Mary left the order in 1960 and became employed at Vassar Brother’s Hospital where she met her husband, Robert J. Mahoney, Sr. She married Robert on October 6, 1962 at St. Mary’s Church in Poughkeepsie, where she was a lifetime parishioner.  Mary worked as a house cleaner and as a secretary at Our Lady of Lourdes High School.

  Survivors include her son Robert J. Mahoney, Jr and his spouse Milissa Mahoney of Standfordville, NY; daughter Colleen Mahoney and her spouse Michele Conklin of Poughkeepsie; grandson Robert A. Mahoney; granddaughters, Kayla and Erin Mahoney; great-grandchildren, Elena Mahoney and Evan Kimma.

  She was predeceased by her brother Thomas Anthony Hyland who passed away May 7, 1951 in Ireland.

  A Memorial Service will be celebrated Thursday, October 25, 10am at St. Mary’s Church, 231 Church St, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Mary will be cremated at buried with Robert at St. Finnian’s Cemetery Moath Rd, Ballyragget, County Kilkenny, Ireland.
