Arthur W. Johnson,86, of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away on June 2, 2021, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He was born on April 5, 1935, to Clara I. Nicholas and Thomas Malcolm (Mack) Johnson in Poughkeepsie NY. Art attended City Poughkeepsie School District, was self-employed as a carpenter and mason. He received an Honorable Discharge from the US Army in 1957. On April 5, 1985, he married Dolores C. Chambers (Bitsy).
Art enjoyed riding motorcycles, playing softball, and traveling. He was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Deacon Ministry, men's choir, and assisted with the building and grounds ministry. This good Christian soldier had a roar of a lion and heart of an angel. No one was able to understand his passion for grape Kool-Aid, Cheez- its, cashews, and pepperoni. He gave special attention to the children in the family. Teaching morals, values, Agape Love, and secretly taught his granddaughter Okia how to be a pool shark.
Besides his wife Dolores, he is survived by, Dwayne W. Lindsay, Carol Chambers, Aqiyl T. Muhammad (Aahahat), Kelly Chambers-Bennett (Jay), who are proud and honored to be called his children. 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Other survivors include siblings, Janette Parker, Ralph Johnson, Larry Johnson, Donald Johnson, Clifton Johnson, Lorraine Yager, Gail Johnson, Margo Monroe, Carlton Johnson, and Kay Littlejohn, a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Art was predeceased by his parents, sisters, Marion E Johnson-Stanton, Izetta Bowman, Betty Evans, and Deborah Doughtery; brothers, William Johnson, Robert Johnson, and Leonard (Noble) Johnson.
Services will be held Friday, June 11, 2021, at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, 15 Smith Street in Poughkeepsie. The repose will be 10AM – 11AM, funeral service 11AM, with procession to follow to Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
