Audrey Dyer passed away peacefully at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York, on November 7, 2023.She was born to Alfred Dyer and Mary C. Peterson on April 6, 1954, in Poughkeepsie, New York. She graduated from Poughkeepsie High School and received an associate degree in applied science from Ulster Community College, associate degrees in communication and media arts and performing arts, and a certificate in music performance from Dutchess Community College. She also received her bachelor of theology and master of theology from the Community Bible Institute in Poughkeepsie, New York.Audrey's unconventional approach to life led her to various experiences, including serving in the Army Reserves and studying the Kyokushin style of Karate under Shihan Kamau Okbar (Willie Williams) and Shihan Frank Clark at Mas Oyama's Karate School. Audrey also trained at the White Plains Dojo under Shihan Shigeru Oyama with Sensei Kenny Buffaloe. She became a first-degree black belt and taught self-defense courses at SUNY New Paltz and the New Paltz Women Crisis Center. Audrey also studied music performance and theater and was featured in several local plays. Audrey worked at IBM in Poughkeepsie for over a decade before becoming a licensed cosmetologist. Everyone who knew Audrey spoke of her kindness and love for children. Affectionately known as "Aunt Audrey," she worked as a foster parent and childcare worker for many years. Audrey loved God, her family, and friends; and was a member of Everlasting Covenant Christian Ekklesia (Everlasting Covenant Church) for many years. Left to cherish her memory include her children—Shailee Johnson, Tina Ector, and Lorenzo Ector; brothers Willie C. Langley (Ola) and Preston Dyer (Joyce); and sister Helen J. Peterson Rhynes; five grandchildren; several nieces, including her niece/best friend Sharon Bennerman (Charles), many nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and close friends. She is preceded in death by her mother, Mary C. Peterson; her father, Alfred Dyer; stepmother, Bertha Dyer; and her brother, Homer "Larry" Peterson. Celebration of Life services will be held on Sunday, December 17, 2023, from 11 am to 1 pm at The Trolley Barn Gallery (489 Main St, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601).
