IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Henderson B
Coleman
March 15, 1928 – March 8, 2016
Henderson B. Coleman, who most recently resided at Castle Point VA Hospital in Wappingers Falls, NY, has departed this world for greater things on March 8, 2016. Henderson, also lovingly called "Henny" by family and friends, was born on March 15, 1928 in the picturesque Hamlet of Salt Point, NY.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Adrienne, his children; Scott (Phyllis) of Camp Spring, MD, and Stacey, Sally and Sandy, all of Poughkeepsie, NY, devoted granddaughters; Dorienne, Cortney and Aden of Maryland and Sarah of Poughkeepsie, NY. Henderson is also survived by nephews; Lonnie, Allen and Kurt, nieces; Sydney and Karen.
He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Almeta Coleman, brothers; Keith, Howard, Herbert and Wilton, and sister; Hazel, who died at birth.
Henderson attended local grade school and continued on to FDR High School where he excelled in sports and received many accolades, including an induction into the FDR Hall of fame in June, 1999, receiving commendation from Sen. Moynihan and Congresswoman Sue Kelley. His athletic achievements were stellar, whether it be football, baseball or basketball. It has been said by many that he was the best local athlete of his time.
Continuing in the sports genre, he attended North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, NC where he continued to excel l in football until the Military Call of Duty in 1951.
As a member of the U.S Army Artillery in North Korea until 1953, he garnered the Korean Service Metal, with two Bronze Service Stars, the U.N Service Metal, the National Defense Service Metal, as well as the Good Conduct Army Metal.
Returning to civilian life, Henny was employed by the former Schatz Federal Bearing Co., and continued his sports as a member of the local industrial leagues. He moved on with his employment and began working at the U.S Postal Service from which he retired in 1992, after 35 years of service.
As "speedy" as he was, he was caught by the love of his life, the former Adrienne Brown. They married on July 24, 1954 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie. Their children subsequently attended Sunday School, as well as receiving their confirmations there as well.
Left to mourn Henderson's passing are cousins, long-time friends, as well as former co-workers. He will be missed by all.
The family takes this opportunity to acknowledge the professionalism and care bestowed on our loved one during his stay at Castle Point VA. He could not possibly have received more compassionate care anywhere else except at home.
