Obituary

Jean Catherine Cowan was called Home to Glory on October 13, 2024, at HealthAlliance Hospital, Kingston, N.Y.

Jean was born in Ottumwa, Iowa on July 30, 1935, along with her twin sister Jane, to the late Leonard Leon Green and Margaret Robinson Green.

She attended school in Ottumwa and Poughkeepsie and studied Psychology and Public Speaking at the Poughkeepsie College Center.  She was employed by Vassar Hospital, Robert Hall Clothing, Western Printing and the Hudson River Psychiatric Center, where she managed the Nurses Administration Office, ultimately retiring after more than 25 years.

Jean was a member from childhood, of the Smith Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church where she served as an Usher and Class Leader of Class #5.  She sang in various choirs, often taking the lead.  Her sweet Soprano voice could be heard singing "God Gave Me A Song", "What Is This" and "Plant My Feet On Higher Ground", to name a few. Jean was led by the Holy Spirit to become a member of the Beulah Baptist Church, where she learned so much more about her Christian faith, under the tutelage of her dear Pastor, Rev. Dr. Jesse V. Bottoms. She served as a member of the Beulah Prayer Ministry. Our beloved "Jeanne" was a beautiful, kind, intelligent, generous and loving person.  She never met a stranger, just a friend she hadn't spoken to yet.

Left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Ynez V. Coston; grandsons Kiev (Shaneah) and Tavi Coston (Kendra); great grandchildren Ziara, Amari, Angelo and Alayah Coston; bonus great grandchild Angelia Adams; and granddog Chub; nephews Larry Freeman, Sr. and Leslie Duncan; great nephew Ibn Lane; cousins Dr. Stanley Harris (Angela), Marcia Clark, Catherine Ann  Thomas, Marian Baugh, and many family members whom she loved dearly.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Barbara M. Dixon, Paroda A. Duncan and Jane W. Green; nieces Carole Gamble and Sheryl Duncan; great nephew Paris Brown; cousin Pamela Moore; and best friend Velma Yeomans.
