John "Hank" Atkins, 82 of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away on Wednesday July 7, 2021, at home.  John was born on October 30, 1938, in Poughkeepsie, NY to the late Lonnie Lawrence and Leola Atkins.  "Hank" was the owner of Hanks Market on Main Street in Poughkeepsie right up until his death.  He loved playing chess and would challenge anyone who came in the store to play.  He was an avid hunter and fishermen.  He served his Country proudly in the United States Army from 1958-1962.

He is survived by his 1st wife, Shirley Postell, and his lifelong partner of 55 years Jackie Cooper; his sons Brian Atkins and Shawn Pitcher; a daughter Tiffany Shepherd; brothers Lannie Atkins, Richard Lawrence, Julius Atkins, Tommy Atkins and Art Atkins.; sister Bessie Lawrence; grandsons Taquan Atkins and Barrington Atkins; granddaughters Shanicqua Johnson and  Ashonta; best friend Thomas McKinney; a friend and supporter William Alting, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.   Besides his parents he was pre-deceased by his brothers Lonnie Lawrence, David Lawrence, Duke Lawrence, and sisters Arabelle Deny and Charlotte.
