Josephine Frances Massie died June 14 in Naples, FL, where, for the last four years, she spent winters with her son and son-in-law. She was 98 years old.
Born on October 14, 1919, at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, Mrs. Massie was the daughter of the late Frank and Frances Siudowska Detmer. A graduate of St. Joseph's School in the City of Poughkeepsie, Mrs. Massie then attended Poughkeepsie High School. She worked as a shop steward at Standard Gage and as a dental assistant for the late Dr. Ulysses Erdreich before raising her children.
On October 6, 1946, she married Roland L. Massie, a City of Poughkeepsie police officer, at St. Joseph's Church in Poughkeepsie. Mr. Massie predeceased her in 1999.
Mrs. Massie was known for her cooking and baking skills, her beautiful singing voice, her enjoyment of travel, her sense of social justice, her infectious smile, her deep faith, and her warmth and love for family, friends and people she just met.
Mrs. Massie is survived by her son Gregory and wife, Christine Evelyn, of Middletown, NY; her son Jonathan and wife, Juanita, of Magnolia, TX; her son Timmian and husband, Peter, of Poughkeepsie and Naples, FL, with whom she made her residence; and her son Christopher and wife, Josephine, of Delmar, NY. She is also survived by six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a cousin, Gertrude Wtulich, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Massie was predeceased by her 10 brothers and sisters: Frank, Theodore, Louis, Henry, Alexander and James Detmer, and Veronica Carey, Philomena Welch, Helen Quinn and Clara O'Brien.
Funeral services were private, with burial in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Poughkeepsie.
Memorial donations may be made to the J. Frances Massie Memorial Scholarship at the Culinary Institute of America, 1946 Campus Way, Hyde Park, NY, 12538. Online donations can be made at: www.ciaalumninetwork.com/JFrancesMassieMemorialScholarship . The scholarship was established in 2003 and helps pay the tuition of Hudson Valley students planning to enter the culinary field.
Arrangements were under the direction of Joseph J. Darrow, Sr. Funeral Home in Poughkeepsie.
