Obituary

Lee O. Mastin a longtime Poughkeepsie resident has peacefully entered into eternal rest, on March 16, 2016 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Lee was born on December 8, 1921 in Charleston, SC to the late Garfield J. Givens and Frances Bowles. Lee is preceded in death by her beloved and devoted husband, of 54 years, Willie L. Mastin, Jr., brothers; Alfred Givens, James Givens, and Samuel Givens , a sister; Frances Davis. Lee is survived by her four children; Gail D. Mastin, of Poughkeepsie, NY, Phyllis E. Mastin (Joshua) of Boston, MA, Willie L. Mastin, III (Carolyn) of San Antonio, TX and Michael A. Mastin (Abigail) of Lowell, MA. Lee is also survived by her six grandchildren Monique Washington (Edward), Shawn Washington, Lauren Miller, Taylor Mastin, Aaliyah Mastin, and Trey Mastin. She is also survived by her eight great-grandchildren; Dytaniel, Andreas, Aleaha, Kiara, Arianna, Malek, Maleka, and Taurianna, and great-great granddaughter Jazarah Washington.

Lee is also survived by her two sisters, Elizabeth Bramble of Poughkeepsie, NY, and Mary J. Bynes of Houston, Texas. And sister-in-law, Gussie (Leonard) Jackson, of Huntsville, AL. Lee also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews.

Lee worked as a short order cook for McDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL. After moving to NY, she was employed by Smith Brothers Cough Drop Company, and Vassar College, which she retired from in May 1987. Lee was a lifelong and much loved member of Smith Metropolitan AME Zion. She was an active member of the Social Action Committee, a past Class Leader and a faithful member of the Missionary Society. Although never one to complain, and when asked how she was, her response would always be "I'm good, can't complain".

Lee was an avid gardener, and a passionate New York Mets fan; especially during the Subway Series between the Mets and Yankees. Lee had a wicked sense of humor that could not be matched by her knowledge of Mets stats. Lee could also finish word puzzle books in record time. Lee was a beautiful woman, who always found it easier and more stylish to make a statement with clothes she made, rather than buy them.  But that never stopped her from shopping.

There wasn't anyone that Lee couldn't talk to. And when she did, they were always greeted by her smile. Lee was deeply loved and will be very much missed by her family and friends. The family wishes to thank the nurses at Vassar Brothers Medical Center for their care and kindness.
