IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Louis
Milburn
July 24, 1942 – May 19, 2023
Louis Milburn, 80, died on May 19, 2023 at Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital. A longtime Poughkeepsie resident, he was born on July 24, 1942, in Manhattan, the son of Ruby Milburn and Louis Rollins. He was father to Annette Joyce.
After surviving the Attica uprising, he brought several important prison rights cases that improved prison medical care and eliminated prison censorship of outgoing mail to the press. Louis was employed for many happy and productive years at the Culinary Institute of America. He was a valued co-worker, a friend and mentor to many colleagues and students alike.
Possessed of a quiet dignity, Louis was a man of strongly held views on politics and life, and many topics in-between. He was a constant letter, writing in longhand, cursive writing: to elected officials, would-be elected officials, bureaucrats, and any others he felt deserving of his advice and opinions. He sought privacy, was grateful for his independence and freedom, and for having lived a long life. He took nothing for granted and overcame many challenges. Louis' life mattered and he touched the lives of many others. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him, those he befriended and encouraged, and by many others who enjoyed his good nature and spirit.
He was formerly married to Doris Milburn.
There will be no calling hours. Per Louis' wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements have been entrusted to Joseph J. Darrow Sr. Funeral Home, Inc. 39 So. Hamilton Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. (845)452-1840
Please consider a donation in Louis' memory to the Culinary Institute of America, 1946 Campus Drive, Hyde Park, New York 12538, or the charity of your choice.
