Margaret “Maggie” Cuomo, a lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie, New York, passed away surrounded by the love of her family and the countless friends whose lives she touched. Born on March 14, 1958, to Geraldine Hawley and Sylvester Cuomo Sr., Maggie was one of ten children and spent her life embodying the values of compassion, generosity, strength, and unconditional love. Maggie was a true pillar of the Poughkeepsie community. Known for opening her home and her heart to anyone in need, she became a source of comfort, guidance, and stability for countless people throughout her life. If someone needed a warm meal, a safe place to stay, a shoulder to lean on, or simply someone who cared, Maggie was there. She never hesitated to help others and expected little in return, believing that kindness was its own reward. A gifted athlete in her younger years, Maggie loved playing softball and bowling and always enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships those activities brought into her life. She was also an avid bingo player, known for her competitive spirit and sense of humor. Throughout the years, Maggie worked many jobs, including at the beloved Sweet Shop on Main Street during the 1980s, as a waitress, and later as a childcare provider, caring for children in her home with the same love and devotion she gave to her own family. Children held a special place in Maggie’s heart. Neighborhood children always knew that Maggie would make sure they were fed, safe, and cared for. Her home was a place of laughter, guidance, discipline when needed, and above all, love. She treated every child who crossed her threshold as family. One of Maggie’s greatest acts of devotion was caring for her cousin, Geraldine Hawley, for 41 years. She faithfully honored a promise made to her dying aunt and never wavered in her commitment. Her selflessness and dedication reflected the extraordinary character that defined her life. Maggie was predeceased by her parents, Geraldine Hawley and Sylvester Cuomo Sr.; her brothers, Donald Cuomo Sr., Sylvester “Beaver” Cuomo Jr., Perry Cuomo, and her beloved little brother, Edward Cuomo; her nephew Charles “Nic” Cuomo & cherished great-grandson, Albaro Soriano Jr., whose memory she carried close to her heart every day. She is survived by her children, Samantha Cuomo and Christopher Cuomo. She is also lovingly survived by Jeremy Cuomo (Christal), and Justin Merritt, her foster children who became her sons in every way that mattered through the years of love, guidance, and family they shared together. She is further survived by her brothers, Anthony Cuomo (Carol) and Benjamin Prinzivalli; her sisters, Agnes Burnett (Gary), Augusta Rose (Scott), and Janice Cuomo; her grandchildren, Michael Cuomo (Ariel), Erika Hernandez-Soriano, Elena Agustin, Hailey Parker, Diamond Cuomo, , Chale Cuomo, Kemper Cuomo, Shado Cuomo, Aryanna Manderson-Crain, Zaryiah Harris, and Sage Nicole Cuomo; and her beloved great-granddaughters, Nayomi Bowers, Maddison Cuomo, Natalia Agustin, Mia Vera-Agustin, Thalia Vera, and Callie Cuomo. Maggie also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and countless friends who were fortunate enough to experience her generosity, wisdom, humor, and unwavering support. Maggie will be remembered for her fierce determination, her strength of character, and her endless capacity to love and care for others. She never measured wealth by what she possessed but by what she could give. Her door was always open, her table always had room for one more, and her heart was large enough to embrace everyone who needed her. Whether by blood, friendship, or circumstance, if you needed family, Maggie became family. While her passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of those who knew and loved her, her legacy will live on through the generations she nurtured, the people she helped, and the example she set. Her kindness transformed lives, her love created family, and her memory will remain a blessing to all who knew her. “Those we love don’t go away. They walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near; still loved, still missed, and forever dear.” A celebration of life will be held on Saturday November 14, 2026, from 10am to 12pm at the Joseph J. Darrow Sr. Funeral Home, Inc 39 So. Hamilton Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Burial to follow at Union Cemetery, Hyde Park.
