It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Marlene Movita Lattery. Born to Sylvia Smith and Verley Hansen on November 11th, 1939 in St. Catherine, Jamaica, Marlene grew to become the enchanting woman we had the honor of knowing. In her lifetime, Marlene achieved her Associates in Culinary Arts and worked several jobs that spoke to the many talents she brought to her community, working chiefly as a seamstress. She married Carlton in Kingston in 1969, cultivating a 54 year long love story. Together they built a life that was a testament to who they were as people- hard working, honest, kind, generous, and compassionate. Their legacy is carried on by their children, Sandra-Dee and Rohan. In addition to her children, Marlene is survived by her grandchildren- Saxon, Duncan, Ahlexsis, Solace, and Sean- and her great grandchild John. Her siblings Cifford Hunter and Jackie Hunter survive her, carrying her memory. She will be deeply missed by her close friends Millicent Coombs, Caran Gaga, Kimberly Earle, the Smith family. A faithful Seventh Day Adventist, her presence will be missed within her church who brought her so much purpose. It is hard to write something that would fully encapsulate Marlene Lattery. It is an easy task to write of her achievements, memberships, and family who lives on. It is much harder to impart the warmth her laugh brought to a room, to describe the comfort found in her embraces, or the love you could taste in her food. Every birthday was made sweeter by her song, every burden was made lighter through her prayer. She would just as quickly comfort you as she would set you straight. Never to be mistaken for a complacent woman, her powerful energy stands as a model to the community that mourns her. It goes without saying that Marlene will be deeply missed by her family and friends- a testament to the kindness and compassion she exuded that allowed her to impact so many people. Although wearing a heavy coat of grief, our love for her is timeless and her love lives on through us, may we live as she did- compassionately, generously, and freely.
