Obituary

Philip Johnson Strother passed away on January 19, 2026, at his home in Poughkeepsie, New York, at the age of 85. Philip’s passing came unexpectedly and with great sadness for his family. His loved ones take solace in knowing that his final days were spent in the company of friends. Born in Sharon, Connecticut, on June 6, 1941, to Havana Johnson Strother and Rufus Strother, Philip was the youngest brother in a large family of thirteen. His formative years were spent working on the family farm, where he developed a lifelong love for family, hard work, and farming. Philip joined the United States Army in 1963 and served honorably until 1965. After his military service, he worked various jobs before finding a long-term career with the New York State Department of Transportation, where he eventually retired. In his later years, Philip was a cherished member of a close-knit group of men who regularly gathered in Poughkeepsie along the Hudson River to socialize, talk and enjoy each other’s company. They affectionately referred to themselves as “the River Rats,” and these friendships brought Philip great joy, laughter, and companionship. Philip was predeceased by his only son, Philip Joseph Strother Jr.; his brothers Lawrence, Gilbert and Herbert Johnson; Rufus, Johnny, and Clarence Strother. He is survived by his brother Richard Strother, and his sisters Gloria Morgan, Ruthie, Esther, and Marie. Philip also leaves behind nieces, nephews, and grandchildren who mourn his loss deeply. Philip will always remain in our hearts and minds. Those who knew him will forever hold onto the memory of a loving father, devoted brother, and loyal friend. All family and friends are welcome to join us on March 7th at 1pm at the Central Baptist Church for a celebration of life. There will be a light repast afterwards for family and friends. The ceremony will be held at 26 Church Rd. Salt Point, New York 12578. Arrangements have been entrusted to Joseph J. Darrow Sr. Funeral Home, Inc. 39 So. Hamilton Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
