Arthur Charter

Arthur J. Charter, 79 passed away Monday May 22, 2023, after battling a long illness. Art, a life-long Poughkeepsie resident, was predeceased by his parents Claire and Lillian Charter, sister, Barbara Palmateer, and brother Kenneth Charter. He is survived by sisters Gail Burger and husband Garth of Gardiner, and Arlene Mund and husband Don of Hyde Park. 

Art married Evelyn Johannessen on September 16, 1967, who survives him at their home in Poughkeepsie. Art is also survived by his three sons: Michael Charter and wife Robyn, Arthur Charter and wife Daniela, Brent Charter and fiancé Anna Rodriguez. Also surviving are his six grandchildren: Nelson, Steven, Miranda, Sky, Jaxon, and Isabelle as well as one great-grandson, Kai.  

Art owned and ran a painting and contracting business for nearly fifty years. He taught his three sons his trade at a young age and all four worked together for many years as painters and paper hangers. Along with his three sons he specialized in historic restoration and was recognized for his work on both the Samuel Morse Estate at Locust Grove and homes in the historic Huguenot district in New Paltz. 

Art loved watching his sons play baseball and coached senior league for the Town of Poughkeepsie. When he was at home, he loved gardening and cooking. Art was known for his homemade bread, manicotti, and ravioli. 

An avid fisherman, Art spent countless hours on the Hudson River fishing for stripers and on the Salmon River in Oswego County fishing for steelheads. Art and his sons also enjoyed yearly fishing trips to Canada.

  His wife Evelyn and family would like to thank the Dutchess County Hospice for their amazing support. Special thanks go to his nurses: Omarasa Kowalski, RN Melinda Hunt LPN, and social worker Corrine King, LMSW. All three women helped care for Art for more than two years and the family couldn't have done it without them!
