Gerald Alexander Grey of Poughkeepsie entered eternal paradise on February 9th, 2022, at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, New York. Gerald was born to the late Philip and Ethel Grey on April 15th, 1937, in the Hopewell Parish of Hanover Jamaica, WestIndies. Gerald met the love of his life, Clementine Maggette of North Carolina, in the city of Poughkeepsie. They married on March 20th, 1971, and shared 50 special years together.
Gerald was a lifelong construction laborer, driver, entrepreneur, carpenter, and “jack of all trades”. He was a member of the Laborers’ International Union of North America Local 1000 for over 25 years and retired in 1993. Gerald loved to work and loved to work away from work, but always made time for family, friends, and fun. He enjoyed the game of Cricket and was a beloved fan of the New York Yankees and Knicks when they were on. He also had a strong passion for the Jamaican board game Ludi. So much so that he was also known for his construction of Ludi boards in the surrounding counties.
Gerald is survived by his wife Clementine Grey, sisters Hazel Grey, Beryl Grey, and Olive Grey, son Peter Merson Grey (father of 6, 8 grandchildren), daughter Sonya Grey (mother of Izaiah), son Gerald Grey II (father of Layla & Tyler), Sister-in-laws Louise Maggette, Phyllis Grey, Geraldine People, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents Ethel and Philip Grey, Brother Cyril Grey, and sisters Ruby Grey and Vivien Grey.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday February 22, 2022, from 10am to 11am at Joseph J. Darrow Sr. Funeral Home, Inc. 39 So. Hamilton Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601, going home service begins at 11am. Burial will be in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery 342 South Ave. Poughkeepsie, New York 12601.
