Ida Hanaburgh Obituary

On September 15, 2021, Stop and Shop lost one of its biggest supporters.

Ida Hanaburgh passed away at home of natural causes at the age of 100.  Her appearance remained younger than her years, her spirit forever strong but her soul longed for those she lovingly referred to as “her people”.  None the less…she left this world as she lived…kicking and screaming!  God help you Dad….she is all yours!  Ida was born on December 13, 1920, daughter of George and Caroline Hawley Roe.  She was predeceased by nine siblings (Rose, George, Caroline, Frank, Mary, Adaline, Harry, William & Charles).  She was also predeceased by her husband of 50 yrs. Lester Hanaburgh and four of their six children: Lester Jr., Ida, Frederick, and Anna.  She is survived by two daughter’s Patricia and Betty who reside in Poughkeepsie and Millerton, NY.  She had many nieces and nephews she talked about especially Marie, Johnny, David, Gloria, Charlie, Frankie, and Anna.  Her secret to a long life-: BenGay for everything.  Never mind it stings your eyes.  It must work!  She enjoyed good health.  Her words of wisdom: “Keep moving as long as your feet will go…and her feet went upstairs & down and in and out of the pick-up till the end!  Religion: Ida was a firm believer in “The God of Vengeance” She would often quote her own scripture of “God will get them…they will see!”.  She also had a strong conviction that she did not come from a Monkey!  Her biggest disappointment: -being turned away at the tattoo parlor who refused to re-pierce her ear at age 97.  She never forgot that guy.  Worldly possessions: Her key ring full of plastic check cashing cards to every grocery store, a large collection of plastic bakery containers and an assortment of kitchen gadgets (I have a list) if anyone has any use for these items please call after the appropriate amount of time (tomorrow would be fine).  Her dislikes: OB’s without a lot of info (I hope this would have met with her approval), going to bed early, napping, lazy men, sneakers, sequined blouses, bingo or being blamed for anything.  Things she never did: take vitamins, go for tests, exercise, diet, drive a car, use a cell phone, stress, go on the internet, drink bottled water or vote (this alone probably added 10yrs. to her life).  Her favorite things: being a diva of all things domestic, feeding EVERYONE, her Christmas Eve supper, re-runs of Dallas, decorating her Christmas tree, drama, picnics and giving.  Her door was always open to her friends, neighbors and family which included your X husband if you had one.  Ida’s legacy: her Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, and Great, Great Grandchildren.  She was especially fond of the ones who gave her boxes of milk chocolate candy, Stromboli, and Chinese food (you know who you are). She has given us all some very good memories.  In her living she taught us about courage and love.  Lastly, I would like to thank Dave for his untiring support, generous spirit, and unfailing love that he has given throughout the years of caring for my family.  We count it a privilege and a blessing to have been able to care for Mom, her life was good but not easy.  At Ida’s request and to no surprise to those who truly knew her there will be no funeral services.  She wanted you to see her while she could still see you and we will respect her wishes.  Her one request was that her family illegally spread her ashes through the streets of Poughkeepsie where she came from.  No decision has been made yet.  Please accept this tribute to Mom in the spirit of which it written… nothing but utmost respect and love.
