Joanne Wood

Joanne Wood, 93, of Shokan, NY, passed away quietly in her sleep on February 10th, 2023. She was born Eleanor Joanne Black on July 3, 1929, in Philadelphia, PA. Joanne attended Upper Darby High School, where she excelled in music. She went on to study music at Oberlin College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts. Following college, Joanne resided in Poolville, NY, Hamilton, NY and from 1967-2020 resided in Shokan, NY until moving to nearby Kingston. Joanne also loved to spend her summers with her family at Lake Otsego in Cooperstown, NY.  Joanne taught music for 62 years, including several years of elementary choral classes for the Onteora School District and piano pedagogy courses at Ulster County Community College. She also taught private piano lessons for 62 years, touching the lives of countless students and families in upstate New York, holding numerous student recitals at the Olive Free Library, and numerous student appearances at the New York State Music Association student music competitions. Joanne attended church services at the Dutch Reformed Church in Shokan, NY, and for many years she volunteered for the food pantry in Boiceville, New York. She loved the New York Mets! Joanne is preceded in death by her parents Cadell Howard Black and Mabel Hamilton Peasley Black, and two brothers, James and William Black. She is survived by Charles F. Wood, her husband of over 65 years, her children William Wood, Robert Wood, and Suzanne Trachtenberg, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
