William A. Dykas, 78 of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away on August 15, 2023, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, with his loving family by his side. Born on April 16, 1945, in Rhinebeck NY he was the son of the late Joseph Dykas and Beatrice King. Bill attended Poughkeepsie Schools. Bill worked for the Parking Enforcement Division of the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department for many years. He worked at the former St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie for over 30 years retiring in 2000. He went on to be a crossing guard for the City of Poughkeepsie School System and worked for the Dutchess County Help Line, saving many lives. Bill was a member of the St. Joseph’s Church, the Polish Club and Elizabeth Town Fish and Game Club in Russia, NY. His favorite saying is “If I could only be half the man my Dog Thinks I am”.
On June 28, 2017, in Kinston, NY he married Warren (Charlie) Joy who survives at home. He also leaves behind his best friend Rita Thompson, the two had a friendship forever. He is survived by his son Shane Dykas; brother Thomas Dykas and sister-in-law Veronica Dykas of Tacoma Washington; his dog Nugget and cat Bertha; several nieces, nephews’ cousins, and a host of friends. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers Joseph and David Dykas; his sister-in-law Maryanne Dykas of Rhinebeck, NY and his cats Gloria, Casey, and Cassidy.
Per Bills wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Monday August 21, 2023, from 6pm to 8pm at the Joseph J. Darrow Sr. Funeral Home, Inc. 39 So. Hamilton Street, Poughkeepsie NY 12601. (845)452-1840. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Bills memory to the Dutchess County SPCA or the Humane Society.
