William Mayo

William Mayo, Sr. was a resident of Poughkeepsie, NY. He entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, peacefully at home.  William was born on February 24, 1936, in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was the son of the late Lester and Rosalie Mayo. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Ethel B. Mayo. in 2007. William was educated in the Poughkeepsie City School district. He worked at Chemprene, Inc. in Beacon, NY and retired after almost 30 years of service.

He loved sports but he especially loved basketball which he played from a young age at Catherine Street Center. He also shared this love with his children and grandchildren.  It was not unusual for him to get into spirited debates about his favorite team (Duke) or some of his favorite players. These conversations almost always ended with him getting the last word in by trashing your team one last time and yelling out Duke, Duke!! William was a fixture around town, and you could often see him at some of his favorite spots picking up a coffee and offering a kind word to all those he encountered.  William leaves behind to cherish fond memories two sons: Conella Lyons of Douglasville, GA and William Mayo, Jr. and his wife Sabrina of Poughkeepsie, NY; four daughters, Rose M. Ottey, Joyce R. Mayo, MaryEllen Mayo and Toyanna M. Mayo, all of Poughkeepsie, NY. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends. He was predeceased by his sister Lillian Mae Cornish and a son-in- law Brian G. Ottey.

  Visitation is Thursday July 28, 2022, 10-11AM with going home services beginning at 11AM at the Bethel Church of God in Christ, 91 Hooker Ave, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.  Burial to follow at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
