William A Smack “Bill”, 63 of Poughkeepsie NY passed away peacefully at home on May 27, 2022. He was born on January 18, 1959, in Salem New Jersey. He was the son of Austin Smack and Constance Lewis. Bill was retired from Cornell Cooperative Extension where he worked as the facilities supervisor for over 20 years and from the Family Partnership Center where he worked as a security guard for 24 years.
Bill was active in the community volunteering for many events. He and his closest friend Ulysses (Cee) Williams hosted a Fourth of July picnic every year at Waryas Park where they fed anyone who was hungry! In 2019, Bill was honored with the Rosa Parks, Lateef Islam “Umoja” award. This award recognized his long-time position as a security guard at the Family Partnership Center and his contribution to the community as someone who genuinely cared for others.

Bill leaves to cherish his memory his significant other of 21 years Stephanie Stoneham, his children Crystal Williams (Brian) William A Smack Jr (Tia & Shawnta), Darryl E Smack (Cherish), Jasmine A Baggett (Lorenzo), Kattie L Evans, Douglas F Stoneham, Shanygne L Stoneham, Austin C Breyette and John A Smack. His brothers Alan K Smack, Darryl E Smack (Indira) and Ulysses s (Cee) Williams (Betty), his adopted sisters Crystal Muse (Robert) and Margaret Wright. Bill was a proud Pop-Pop of 29 grandchildren and Great Pop-Pop to three great grandchildren with more on the way this summer! A host of cousins three of which he thought of more like sisters, Marsha Robinson, Donna Lee and Mabel Johnson, and host of nieces and nephew and friends
Bill enjoyed going to flea markets on the weekends off and was always on the hunt for the next treasure especially elephants! Bill was giving and kind and would do anything to help anyone, always putting his needs last. Bill had a deep unconditional love and pride for his family, but his greatest pride was to be called Pop-Pop! Truly he was “The Great One” and leaves behind a legacy that will live on forever!
Visitation will be held Friday June 3, 2022, from 9am to 10am at the Joseph J. Darrow Sr. Funeral Home, Inc. 39 So. Hamilton Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
